Introduction
The life of Bhagavad Ramanujacharya is not merely a historical account of a great philosopher; it is a sacred journey guided by divine grace and the blessings of the Acharya lineage. After the dramatic turning point in which Sri Ramanujar escaped danger during his studies under Yadava Prakasha, his life gradually moved toward the spiritual tradition that would define his mission.
This phase of Sri Ramanujar Vaibhavam introduces one of the most important figures in the Sri Vaishnava tradition — Yamunacharya, also known as Alavandar.
Although Ramanujar had not yet met Yamunacharya directly, the influence of this great Acharya and his disciples began to shape the future of Ramanujar’s spiritual life.
These events reveal how divine guidance works through the Acharya Parampara, the sacred lineage of teachers who transmit spiritual knowledge from generation to generation.
Yamunacharya – The Great Acharya of the Sri Vaishnava Tradition
Before understanding Ramanujar’s connection to Yamunacharya, it is important to understand who Yamunacharya was.
Yamunacharya (Alavandar) was one of the greatest scholars and spiritual leaders of the Sri Vaishnava tradition. He was the grandson of the revered Acharya Nathamuni, who had preserved and organized the sacred Tamil hymns of the Alwars, known as the Divya Prabandham.
Yamunacharya was not only a brilliant philosopher but also a devoted servant of Lord Ranganatha of Srirangam.
Through his writings and teachings, Yamunacharya clarified many philosophical principles that later became central to Vishishtadvaita Vedanta.
Among his important contributions were works explaining:
- the nature of the Supreme Lord
- the path of devotion and surrender
- the relationship between the soul and God
His influence extended across the Sri Vaishnava community, and many disciples carried his teachings to different regions.
The Acharya Parampara
One of the most important concepts in the Sri Vaishnava tradition is the Acharya Parampara, the lineage of spiritual teachers.
This lineage ensures that the teachings of the scriptures are transmitted correctly and preserved across generations.
The tradition flows through a sacred sequence of teachers beginning with:
- Lord Narayana
- Sri Mahalakshmi
- Vishvaksena
- Nammalwar
- Nathamuni
- Yamunacharya
Ramanujar would later become one of the greatest Acharyas in this lineage.
But before that could happen, certain events needed to unfold that would bring him into contact with this sacred tradition.
Ramanujar’s Reputation as a Young Scholar
By this time, Sri Ramanujar had already gained recognition as an exceptionally talented scholar.
His ability to interpret the scriptures with clarity and devotion attracted the attention of many spiritual seekers.
Even those who disagreed with his interpretations recognized that Ramanujar possessed a rare combination of:
- deep scriptural knowledge
- humility
- devotion to Lord Narayana
News about this remarkable young scholar gradually spread among the Sri Vaishnava community.
Among those who heard about him were the disciples of Yamunacharya.
Yamunacharya’s Desire to Meet Ramanujar
According to Sri Vaishnava tradition, Yamunacharya came to know about the brilliance and devotion of Ramanujar.
Hearing about this young scholar, Yamunacharya felt a deep interest in meeting him.
Many devotees believed that Yamunacharya recognized Ramanujar as the person who would one day carry forward the philosophical and devotional teachings of the Sri Vaishnava tradition.
Therefore, Yamunacharya wished to meet Ramanujar and guide him further on the spiritual path.
However, destiny had its own timing.
The Journey Toward Srirangam
As events unfolded, Ramanujar began moving closer to the spiritual centers of the Sri Vaishnava tradition.
Among these centers, Srirangam held a special place.
Srirangam is the sacred temple of Lord Ranganatha, one of the most important pilgrimage sites for devotees of Lord Vishnu.
Yamunacharya spent much of his time there, guiding devotees and teaching the principles of devotion and surrender.
It was here that the teachings of the Alwars and the philosophy of devotion were flourishing.
Ramanujar’s destiny was gradually drawing him toward this sacred center.
The Passing of Yamunacharya
According to the traditional narration of Sri Ramanujar Vaibhavam, an important and emotional moment occurred before Ramanujar could meet Yamunacharya.
When Ramanujar finally traveled toward Srirangam to meet the great Acharya, Yamunacharya had already passed away.
This moment is remembered as a profound turning point in Ramanujar’s life.
When Ramanujar saw the body of Yamunacharya, he noticed something unusual.
Three fingers of Yamunacharya’s hand remained folded.
The disciples explained that Yamunacharya had three wishes that had not yet been fulfilled.
The Three Sacred Promises
Upon hearing about these wishes, Ramanujar made three solemn promises.
He vowed that he would:
- Write a commentary on the Brahma Sutras explaining the philosophy of Vishishtadvaita.
- Spread the teachings of the great saint Nammalwar, ensuring that the wisdom of the Divya Prabandham reached future generations.
- Preserve and propagate the teachings of the Sri Vaishnava tradition.
According to tradition, as Ramanujar made these promises, the three folded fingers of Yamunacharya’s hand slowly opened.
Devotees interpreted this as a divine sign that Ramanujar had been chosen to continue the mission of the Sri Vaishnava Acharya lineage.
The Beginning of Ramanujar’s Mission
This moment marked the beginning of a new chapter in Sri Ramanujar’s life.
Although he had not met Yamunacharya during the Acharya’s lifetime, the spiritual connection between them became clear.
Ramanujar now carried the responsibility of fulfilling the mission that Yamunacharya had envisioned.
From this point onward, Ramanujar’s life would become dedicated to:
- spreading the philosophy of Vishishtadvaita
- strengthening the Sri Vaishnava tradition
- guiding devotees toward the path of devotion and surrender
