Part 6 – Ramanujar’s Entry into the Sri Vaishnava Tradition and the Guidance of Periya Nambi

Introduction

After the emotional moment at Srirangam, where Sri Ramanujar made sacred promises before the body of Yamunacharya (Alavandar), his life entered a new and decisive stage.

Until this point, Ramanujar had been known primarily as a brilliant scholar and devoted seeker of truth. But now, destiny began guiding him toward a much greater responsibility — becoming the spiritual leader who would carry forward the teachings of the Sri Vaishnava Acharya lineage.

Although Yamunacharya had already left the mortal world, his disciples recognized the extraordinary spiritual qualities of Ramanujar. They believed that Ramanujar was the one chosen to fulfill the unfinished mission of their Acharya.

Among these disciples, one person played a particularly important role in Ramanujar’s life: Periya Nambi (Mahapurna).

Through the guidance of Periya Nambi, Ramanujar formally entered the Sri Vaishnava tradition and began preparing for the great spiritual mission that awaited him.

Periya Nambi – The Disciple of Yamunacharya

Periya Nambi, also known as Mahapurna, was one of the foremost disciples of Yamunacharya.

He was deeply respected in the Sri Vaishnava community for his:

  • devotion to Lord Ranganatha
  • knowledge of scriptures
  • humility and compassion

Periya Nambi had been closely associated with Yamunacharya and understood the Acharya’s vision for the future of the Sri Vaishnava tradition.

When he learned about Ramanujar and the promises made at Srirangam, he realized that Ramanujar was destined to play a central role in fulfilling that vision.

Therefore, Periya Nambi took the initiative to guide Ramanujar and help him enter the Acharya lineage.

The Meeting Between Ramanujar and Periya Nambi

The meeting between Ramanujar and Periya Nambi is remembered as a sacred moment in Sri Vaishnava history.

Periya Nambi recognized Ramanujar’s spiritual potential immediately. He saw in Ramanujar the qualities that Yamunacharya had wished for in a successor:

  • deep devotion to Lord Narayana
  • extraordinary understanding of scriptures
  • humility and compassion toward devotees

Ramanujar, in turn, showed great respect and reverence toward Periya Nambi.

He accepted him as his spiritual guide and sought to learn the deeper traditions of the Sri Vaishnava path.

This meeting marked the beginning of Ramanujar’s formal connection with the Acharya Parampara.

The Sacred Initiation – Pancha Samskara

One of the most important events during this phase of Ramanujar’s life was his initiation into the Sri Vaishnava tradition through the sacred ceremony known as Pancha Samskara.

This ceremony represents the formal acceptance of a devotee into the path of surrender to Lord Narayana.

Pancha Samskara consists of five sacred rites:

1. Tapam

The imprinting of the symbols of the conch (Shankha) and discus (Chakra) on the shoulders of the devotee, representing the devotee’s dedication to the service of Lord Vishnu.

2. Pundram

The application of the sacred Urdhva Pundra (Vaishnava tilak) on the body, symbolizing devotion to the Supreme Lord.

3. Nama

Receiving a spiritual name that reflects the devotee’s identity as a servant of the Lord.

4. Mantra

Initiation into sacred mantras such as the Ashtakshara mantra (“Om Namo Narayanaya”).

5. Yaga

Learning the proper methods of worship and service to the Lord.

Through this sacred initiation performed by Periya Nambi, Ramanujar formally entered the Sri Vaishnava tradition.

This moment represented not just a ritual but a transformation of Ramanujar’s life.

Ramanujar’s Dedication to Spiritual Learning

After receiving initiation, Ramanujar devoted himself fully to learning the deeper teachings of the Sri Vaishnava tradition.

He studied:

  • the teachings of Nathamuni
  • the philosophical works of Yamunacharya
  • the devotional hymns of the Alwars

These teachings revealed the profound connection between Vedantic philosophy and devotional surrender.

Ramanujar understood that the ultimate goal of spiritual life was not merely intellectual knowledge but loving service to the Supreme Lord.

This understanding strengthened his commitment to the path of Prapatti, or complete surrender to God.

The Role of the Divya Prabandham

Another important aspect of Ramanujar’s spiritual education was the study of the Divya Prabandham.

The Divya Prabandham is a collection of devotional hymns composed by the Alwars, the saint-poets who expressed intense love for Lord Vishnu.

These hymns are considered the Tamil equivalent of the Vedas in the Sri Vaishnava tradition.

Through these hymns, Ramanujar learned how devotion and poetry could convey spiritual truths in a way that touched the hearts of ordinary people.

This insight later influenced his efforts to make spiritual teachings accessible to all devotees.

Ramanujar’s Growing Influence

As Ramanujar deepened his understanding of the Sri Vaishnava tradition, his reputation as a spiritual teacher continued to grow.

Devotees were drawn to him because of his:

  • clarity of explanation
  • humility and compassion
  • dedication to the Lord

Ramanujar did not seek fame or authority. His goal was simply to serve the Lord and guide others toward devotion.

However, it became increasingly clear that he possessed the qualities necessary to lead the Sri Vaishnava tradition into a new era.

Lessons from This Stage of Ramanujar’s Life

This phase of Sri Ramanujar’s life highlights several important principles.

1. The Importance of the Acharya

Spiritual knowledge is transmitted through the guidance of a qualified teacher.

2. Initiation Represents Spiritual Commitment

The Pancha Samskara ceremony marks the devotee’s dedication to the service of the Supreme Lord.

3. Devotion Must Be Accompanied by Knowledge

Ramanujar studied both philosophy and devotional literature to develop a complete understanding of the spiritual path.

4. Humility Attracts Divine Grace

Ramanujar’s humility and sincerity allowed him to receive the blessings of great Acharyas.

Conclusion

Sri Ramanujar’s initiation into the Sri Vaishnava tradition under the guidance of Periya Nambi represents a crucial moment in his life.

Through this initiation, Ramanujar formally entered the Acharya lineage and began preparing for the mission that destiny had assigned to him.

In the years that followed, he would emerge as one of the greatest spiritual leaders in Indian history — a teacher who united philosophy and devotion and opened the path of divine knowledge to countless devotees.

The next stage of Sri Ramanujar Vaibhavam will reveal how Ramanujar’s teachings began to spread and how his influence transformed the Sri Vaishnava tradition.
